Momma’s Music
by Melissa Young
momma’s laughter
drawls me from a dream
a bright white painted glow
grows into this dark room
and I watch
from deep-space
my mother’s dress
hem sweeping dust storms across
a yellow-linoleum universe
twirling around, recoiling
as he pulls her close into his chest
and their bodies heave together
chickens squawking
and the roar of an old ford
signals that a dirty boot
will soon be stopping
the backdoor just before
it slams shut, then
easing it to
quietly
while momma
turns the radio off
and her tears
into a smile
